Your design file may be getting larger than you expected and you're wondering how our converter can handle such big files. When it comes to converting your files, here's all you need to know about file size limitations.
Note: most files from 1MB to 1GB will barely have a problem with conversions on Magicul. It could take a few more minutes to convert a larger file but there will be no issues.
Photoshop file sizes
Because Photoshop is a pixel-based software, it can pretty much max out on the file size it produces. Usually, the images in the file count a lot to how big it gets. If you're converting your Photoshop file to Sketch or Figma, it is advisable to lower the resolution of your images for faster conversion. You can either reduce the resolution manually of images to make sure they only have the actual size required (e.g. make sure to resize large photos with a resolution over 2000x2000 before you convert your file). Additionally websites like www.tinypng.com or any similar tool on the web can help you reduce the size of images.
Note: Photoshop files have a size limitation of 2GB. Anything larger than this becomes a .psb file instead of .psd
PSB stands for photoshop big. We don't have support for uploading the PSB file format at the time of writing this article. We hope to introduce it soon. If your file is a .psb file, you can simply split it up into smaller chunks to reduce the size and save it as a .psd file instead. Additionally, having your PSD files anywhere between 1MB and 1GB seems to be the sweet spot.
Adobe Illustrator and PDF file sizes
You can have both Adobe Illustrator or PDF files in very large sizes. Generally this is not ideal. For example, your Adobe Illustrator file can be as big as 8GB but exporting it to a PDF file will either choke your computer or take a long time. Very large PDF files also take longer than usual when opening in Adobe Illustrator.
Our converter can handle large file sizes in PDF and Adobe Illustrator as well. On the other hand, an 8GB Illustrator file will be quite huge and could potentially crash. In such cases, it's best to work on the file to reduce the size of the images and any other large elements. You can also split the file into smaller chunks and convert them separately.
Sketch and Figma file sizes
Designers love Figma and Sketch for speed and their very user-friendly interface. The good thing here is, Sketch and Figma files weigh almost 10 times less than Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator files.
Figma is a little different. File sizes are not really considered because it's a cloud-based software. When converting Figma files, however, it can take longer if the number of frames is a lot more than usual. Anywhere below 1000 frames is usually a quick conversion. You will barely face issues with file sizes in Figma but you can send us your file link at support@magicul.io to quickly advise.
Adobe XD file sizes
Adobe does not have a known file size limit for Adobe XD. Similar to Sketch and Figma, you'll barely have an issue with size. The sweet spot in terms of converting an Adobe XD file would also be between 1MB and 1GB.
In rare cases when converting from XD to Figma or Sketch large photos or images can become a problem and cause the conversion to crash or the resulting file to not open.
To resolve this we advise to lower the resolution of your images. You can reduce the resolution manually to make sure they only have the actual size required (e.g. make sure to resize large photos with a resolution over 2000x2000 before you convert your file).
